Sharing the Australian highways with very big loads is part of the adventure of travel.
“pilot vehicles” travel our highways with a large yellow sign on the roof, accompanied by two yellow, rotating beacons. You can’t miss them.
Experience demonstrates some motorists do miss them, completely. Which is rather unfortunate when you consider the consequences.

Concerns have been expressed by Truck drivers that some RVs have been parking in their Truck Bays.
Please ensure that you do not park in the truck rest bays as you might find yourself coming off worse for wear.
Truckies and RV travellers must work together, it is not a one-way street.

Tow Ball Weights?
Tow Ball Weights have become another target for the state authorities, where in some cases travellers have been put off the road for exceeding their limits and in one case the purchase of a suitable vehicle to get moving again.
Have a look at the sites listed to get some info and check your Tow Ball Weight.
This article was brought to our attention by the Ballarat Caravan Club and should help you to understand what's going on with Rated D Shackles.
WeighStation
Contact Mac to arrange a place, time and date. You might even consider organising a club day so that a number of Vans/Vehicles can be assessed. By doing so the rate per Van/vehicle can be reduced significantly.
Trucks and Caravans
The Caravan Industry Association in conjunction with the ACCVIC have produced a handy brochure outlining the considerations for trucks and caravans using the roads.
Look out for it at the Major Caravan shows.
Report on 'D' & Bow shackles for attaching safety chains to towing vehicles
Select the pdf icon to open/view/print.
There have been a few reports recently about people being fined for having the incorrect type of “D” shackle to attach whatever they were towing to their vehicle – be it a caravan, boat or trailer. So far I have not been able to actually find anyone who has been fined for this unless they were towing something without the chains being actually connected.
I have checked quite a few websites of various state government departments and they all recommend that the shackles used should meet Australian Standard AS2741-2002 “shackles” or another equivalent standard, and that they have a break-load limit that is 1.5 times greater than the ATM of the trailer.

Towball Downweight Scales
Towball Downweight has been a hot topic recently.
It has been reported that Towball Downweight Scales are available for around $60 - $70 from local Repco stores.
Some clubs are buying a set of scales and making them available to members as required for checking their Ball Weights.
Tyre Failure

In recent months, several members of the Knox Caravan & Camping Club Inc. have experienced catastrophic tyre failure on a caravan wheel. There has been lots of talk about tyres failing due to age, even though the tyres in question still had plenty of tread, and appeared to be in good condition. We have tended to assume that age was probably the cause, but was it? Read the attached PDF file for more info ...
